When her husband died, it was thought there was no way that his tiny sliver of a wife would be able to run the farm.

Bringing in the harvest without him didn’t go well and the winter that followed was particularly cruel. Many of her animals had died, many of her stores were depleted.

And so it came to pass, early in the spring, that the widow Bissel gathered what gold she and her husband had been able to save over the last 20 years, told Marvin the farmhand to watch the farm, and began a three-day walk to the city of Zuckerberg where the largest livestock markets on the plains could be found.
